We had an Optoma HD80 that i thought was great until it started having shadowing problems. We decided to go the cheap route and replace it with the Optoma HD20 and I was disappointed. The picture quality was just not as sharp as we were used to so we returned. I read good reviews about the Epson 8700 but was skeptical because I had also heard great things about the Optoma HD20.
However, I was shocked at how much better the picture was. Images in the background were so much sharper than either of the Optoma projectors. Right out of the box the picture was great without the need to tweak it very much. It also runs noticeably quieter than the Optomas. One nice feature is it has an automatic shutoff if there is no input. We have kids and sometimes they are careless about turning everything off and those lamps go quickly if you leave it on all night!
It is quite a bit larger then the Optomas which wasn't a problem for us but could be if you have limited space. Really the only negative so far. So, if you are looking for a movie theater quality picture, then you really need to avoid the temptation of the under $2,000 projector and consider the 8700.
